Free Online 3MF to STL Converter

A 3MF file carries geometry, colors, materials, print plates, sometimes even slice settings. An STL keeps exactly one of those things: the triangle mesh. Convert 3MF to STL right here in your browser — upload, spin the model around in the preview to check it, then download a clean STL that any slicer will take. No sign-up, and the file stays on your device the whole time.

How to Convert 3MF to STL in 3 Steps

  1. Drop your .3mf file into the upload area, or click to browse. Up to 50 MB. The file is parsed locally in your browser — nothing gets sent to a server.
  2. Check the preview. Rotate, zoom, and make sure the mesh is what you expect before committing to anything.
  3. Hit Convert and download the STL. It drops straight into Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, whatever you run.

That's the whole workflow. The rest of this page is about the two questions people actually get stuck on: which software to use if you'd rather do it yourself, and what you give up when you strip a 3MF down to STL.

Convert 3MF to STL in Bambu Studio, Cura, Blender & More

Online converters are the fast path. But if you already live in a 3D tool, most of them can do this conversion too — with very different levels of hassle. Here's the honest map.

Bambu Studio

Bambu Studio treats 3MF as its native project format, so "converting" is just exporting. Open or import the 3MF, select the objects you want, then use File → Export → STL. Two things worth knowing before you start:

  • Since version 1.8.3, Bambu Studio writes 3MF files that follow the 3MF Consortium's reading code, per Bambu Lab's own compatibility notes (June 2024).
  • By default it saves with the 3MF Production Extension, which packs model data across multiple files inside the archive. That's great for big multi-plate jobs and also why some other slicers choke on Bambu-exported 3MF files.

UltiMaker Cura

Cura opens 3MF directly: click the folder icon, pick your file, done. To go the other way, select the object and use File → Export Selection, then pick STL as the file type. You'll get a choice between ASCII and Binary STL — pick Binary unless you specifically need to read the file in a text editor; ASCII files balloon to several times the size for the same mesh.

Blender (with the 3MF add-on)

Here's where people waste an afternoon. Blender does not import 3MF out of the box — the format list in the official manual covers OBJ, PLY, STL, FBX, USD and friends, but no 3MF. You need the 3MF Import/Export add-on from Blender's official Extensions platform (it supports 3MF Core Spec v1.4.0). After that: import the 3MF, then export via File → Import/Export → Stl (.stl). And note the add-on handles import and export, while Blender's own matrix entry lists 3MF as import-only — so treat round-tripping through Blender as untested territory.

Tinkercad

Tinkercad can't open 3MF at all. Autodesk's help center is explicit: imports are STL or OBJ only, 25 MB cap. So if your model lives in Tinkercad-land, converting 3MF to STL first is the required first step — "3mf to stl tinkercad" shows up in Google's related searches for this exact reason.

Windows 3D Builder & 3D Viewer

Both ship with Windows and both handle 3MF natively — 3D Builder imports and exports, 3D Viewer opens files that follow the Consortium spec, including Bambu Studio's. Open the 3MF, save or export as STL. It's clunky for real work but fine for a one-off conversion on a machine with nothing else installed.

Other CAD tools

SolidWorks and Fusion users: 3MF support varies by version and export route, so check your release's documentation before promising anything to a client. FreeCAD handles the STL side well through its Mesh workbench.

3MF vs STL: What Changes When You Convert

Stripping 3MF down to STL isn't a format swap — it's a removal job. 3MF has been an ISO standard since 2025 (ISO/IEC 25422:2025, per the 3MF Consortium), and the spec suite defines full color, multi-material definitions, build-plate packaging, and sliced data as first-class features. STL, a format from the late 1980s, stores triangles and nothing else.

Survives conversion Lost in conversion

Slice settings & supports ❌

Two practical consequences. First, file size: a 3MF is typically orders of magnitude smaller than the equivalent STL because it's a compressed container, so expect the STL to come out heavier, not lighter. Second, color prints: a multi-color 3MF converts into a single-material STL without complaint — no warning, just a monochrome mesh. If you needed that color data, you'll find out at the printer.

This is why we put the 3D preview before the Convert button. A converter that blinds you to the result isn't saving you time; it's deferring the surprise.

Do You Need to Convert? 3MF Prints Directly

Often, no. Every major modern slicer — Bambu Studio, Cura, PrusaSlicer, Orca — opens 3MF natively, and Bambu Studio saves its own projects as 3MF by default. If your entire pipeline speaks 3MF, converting to STL throws away data for no benefit.

Convert when something downstream only speaks STL: an older slicer, an online printing service, Tinkercad, a CAD tool on an older version. And if you ever need to go back — STL to 3MF, say, to add colors or organize plates — our STL to 3MF converter runs the same way, in your browser.

FAQ

Can a 3MF file be converted to STL?

Yes. The mesh geometry inside a 3MF converts cleanly to STL; it's the colors, materials, plates, and slice settings that don't survive. See the table above for the full list.

How do I convert 3MF to STL in Bambu Studio?

Import the 3MF, then File → Export → STL. Worth checking first whether you actually need to: Bambu Studio slices 3MF directly, so for printing on a Bambu machine you can usually skip the conversion entirely.

Can you 3D print a 3MF file?

Yes — and it's usually the better option. 3MF is a print-ready format; your slicer reads it, keeps the plates and settings intact, and you print from there. STL conversion is for when a tool in your chain can't read 3MF.

Why does my slicer fail to open a 3MF that works somewhere else?

Probably a Production Extension file. That extension stores model data across several files inside the archive, with the root file indexing them — built for high-volume print farms. Slicers that only read the single-file Core Spec layout will fail on it. Bambu Lab documents this exact behavior in their compatibility notes.

Is it possible to convert STL to 3MF?

Yes, and it's the more common direction than people expect — adding colors, splitting into plates, or attaching print settings all require going STL → 3MF. Most slicers do it on import; you can also use our browser-based converter.

Is the converter really free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, no daily cap. 50 MB per file, converted locally in your browser.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Parsing and conversion run in your browser via three.js and WebAssembly. The file stays on your device.

Are 3MF and STL the same?

No. 3MF is a compressed, extensible container standardized as ISO/IEC 25422:2025; STL is a triangle-list format from the 1980s. They overlap only on raw geometry.

Will converting to STL ruin my model?

Geometry survives. Scale and units carry over. What you lose is everything non-geometric — which matters enormously for color prints and not at all for a standard single-material part.

Does conversion fix broken meshes?

It doesn't, and a converter that claims to "fix" your model during format conversion is overselling. If the mesh has holes or non-manifold edges, you'll want a mesh repair tool — our STL editor handles that after conversion.
